More good things happening

William continues to do great things. We found out this morning he passed the 5 lb mark and is currently weighing in at 5 lbs 2oz. This is great because shortly after being admitted to the NICU his weight was 4 lbs 10 oz, so our little buddy is cruising right along.

Another great thing William has on his side is his nurses. The nurses here at Essentia are top of the line and have been amazing through this whole thing. Last night I had a very much needed “girl time” with a few of them talking about the woes of being pregnant. William’s nurses are always there to help us if needed but have no problem letting Zach and I fumble over getting his swaddled and making sure we know what is going on through everything. They also have no problem answering my zillion questions. The other night I questioned if him getting a sodium supplement would be causing him to spit up, the nurse didn’t know so she asked and they didn’t know so now they are going to ask the doctor when he comes in. One very interesting thing about all his  nurses (and most of mine) that Zach noticed is they all have names that end in the “ee” sound.

Today is going to be a hard day though. I am being discharged and William is not. He will stay here until they are sure he is doing everything well and will be ok once he leaves the NICU. Right now the main concern his is hemoglobin and sodium levels. It was brought to my attention that I never really explained the hemoglobin, so here is what I have learned. Hemoglobin is what causes your blood to clot. When it is too high it can cause circulation problems and cause issues with brain development and heart problems. Because William is so small his veins are VERY small and so they watch this level to ensure that he isn’t at risk for any blood clots.

That is about all I have for now, keep those prayers coming, they are working!
